"Homeowners spent $138.1 billion on home improvements in 2003, up 6% from 2001 and the highest level ever. This included expenditures on additions, kitchen and bath remodeling, and replacement of systems, roofing, windows and flooring among many other categories. Home improvement projects continue to be fueled by home equity loans and mortgage refinancing which allow consumers to take advantage of sharply rising home values."

Each year Remodeling Magazine puts out an extensive report of the cost and value of typical renovation projects in different areas of the country. This report includes renovation projects such as family room addition, master suite addition, kitchen remodel, bathroom remodel, deck addition, window replacement, and siding replacement. Not surprisingly prices in the northeast are among the highest in the country but the return on value is also the highest.
